How did Hal Jordan die ....what is and how did he become a spectre?

-Hal Jordan died during the DC comics event called Final Night. It was a crossover through all of the DC superhero titles of the time. I'm not sure if the crossover titles are collected, but the main Final Night miniseries is collected in paperback, and that's where Hal died anyway.

A sun-eater, which is pretty much self-explanatory, came towards earth and devoured the sun despite the best effort of the superheroes to stop it. At this point, Hal has already gone evil because the cyborg superman destroyed coast city. Ok, so there is no sun, which means the whole world is freezing, and the world's about to end.

Someone needed to reignite the sun, which was obviously a suicide mission. Ferro Lad (the legionnaire who sacrificed himself to defeat a sun-eater in the 30th century before all of the reboots) took the spaceship with the intent to sacrifice himself to reignite the sun. Initially, Hal (Parallax) had refused Kyle Rayner's (Green Lantern) plea for help, but he has a change of heart, saving Ferro Lad and sacrificing himself instead.

Later, the Spectre's host since the golden age, Jim Corrigan, finally was allowed to move on to heaven. The Spectre is "God's Spirit of Vengeance". Basically, he judges people, and kills them and sends them to hell if they are guilty. Without a host, he is prone to random rampages. In the Day of Judgment, just google it for more info, some superheroes went looking for Corrigan in heaven to bond him to the Spectre again, but ended up in Purgatory, where they found Hal. Hal becomes the Spectre's new host and tries to change it into the Spirit of Redemption.Hal Jordan died during the DC comics event called Final Night.
